Denture Repair While You Wait

In many cases broken dentures can be repaired rather than replaced. When a person who wears dentures has a cracked tooth or the denture snaps in half they can have their dentures repaired. In general there are two types of denture prosthetics:

  1. When a person has the most of the teeth healthy and in good working order they only require a partial denture for the missing teeth.
  2. In cases when a person has no healthy or strong teeth left in the mouth, a dentist would send an order to the lab for a full denture to be made. The full denture will replace all the teeth in the bite.

The making of denture prosthetics is not always a straightforward process. It usually requires three to five visits to the dentist. The good thing is that most of the acrylic denture prosthetics are available on the NHS. Dentures usually last for over 20 years and in most cases they can be repaired if broken.

Most denture repairs can be done within an hour but sometimes depending on the damage it could take longer. Some people try to fix their dentures at home, but we would advise you to take it to your local dental laboratory. A professional dental technician will perform a permanent long lasting repair on your denture.

New Dentures – 3 to 5 visits to the dentist

When you require new dentures you should make an appointment with your dentist and not come directly to the dental laboratory. Typically it takes 3 to 5 dental visits depending on each individual case requirements.

On your first visit usually the dentist will take an x-ray picture of your mouth. It will help to see the state of the jaw, gums and teeth and determine what work is required.

On your second visit, the dentist will usually take an impression of your mouth and send it to the dental lab for casting a model of your bite. That will help to ensure a proper fitting for your new dentures when it is done.

Your third visit will be for trying in your denture and the dentist will ensure that it will fit properly in your mouth. They will make minor adjustments if needed if you have any chewing or biting problems. When the denture feels comfortable in your mouth you will have a testing period before you make your next appointment.

A few weeks after the denture has been fitted the dentist will check if the denture has been fitted correctly and it does not give you any trouble or discomfort. The dentist will also want to see how you are doing and review the cleaning and care process for your new denture. If you are having a problem chewing, biting or any discomfort, the dentist will try to fix the problem. If the problem remains then the denture will be sent back to the dental laboratory for adjustments.

When Do I Need Denture Repair?

Dentures last longer if you take good care of them. The dentures life span depends on the quality of the care you put into them. They need to be cleaned regularly and handled with care. It will save you the need of visiting the dentist and more money for denture repairs. Dentures are not made to last for life but with good care you will be able to avoid more frequent visits to the dentist or your local dental technician laboratory.

Do I need to go to the dentist to fix my broken denture?

If an accident occurs you will need to make an appointment with your dentist. Alternatively you can check for a dental laboratory laboratory in your local area. An experienced dental technician can repair your denture usually while you wait. It may be cheaper to take your denture to the dental laboratory directly which in effect means avoiding the middle man cost in this case the dentist. Get directions to the lab >>

Denture Repair Strength

The strength and durability of your denture will depend on how you look after it. They will last longer if well looked after. Using a special denture solution or even just water to clean the dentures overnight will help to keep them clean and in good condition. Dentures cannot be repaired again and again indefinitely. If the denture breaks or cracks over and over again you will probably require to replace them with a new one. A good set of dentures will make a huge difference in your life.
